In the sub-continent, no auspicious occasion can be celebrated without sweets; sweets are served when a marriage engagement is fixed, for celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, after birth of a child, when someone does well in school, college or university, when someone gets a job, and many such other happy occasions. This fact is enough to prove how significant this food type is for the culture and people in this part of the world.
We would probably not be wrong if we say that such traditions of serving or distributing sweets have originated from immense love for this type of food. Yes, these people are real sweet tooths
While people in the sub-continent love to have cakes, pastries and other desserts made based on recipes taken from other parts of the globe, the popularity of those dishes cannot be compared to the popularity of the traditional items. Sweets served during auspicious occasions are almost always the traditional mithais. It's true that some families prefer serving pies, cakes and pastries during celebrations; but such families are pretty rare.
Over the years sweets, however, have evolved significantly. Today, we see confectioners in these regions using exotic flavors and designs to make these items. Earlier, they used only flavors like saffron, rose, mango, lemon etc. for making the traditional sweets. However, now things have changed drastically; today, the confectioners also use flavors like vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, butterscotch, black current etc. for making traditional mithais. These are all flavors that we normally find in ice creams and pastries, but the creativity of sweet makers have ensured that traditional items also carry these exotic flavors.
There's another factor that makes these classic sugary items so popular among people in this part of the world; it's their diversity. Each country of the sub-continent has different specialities as far as types of sweets are concerned. In some parts the use of cottage cheese is more common, while in others the confectioners prefer using condensed, dried milk.
It's true that some parts make better items than the others, but it cannot be denied that there's at least one famous item in every part of the sub-continent.
If you have no happy occasions to celebrate right now, you can have these delicious items just as dessert after a fulfilling meal. The food of this part of the world is also excellent, so you will not need to struggle much to get a good place to eat.
